Learn the meaning of the word Ubuntu meaning “humanity” through the township culture.
The Apartheid-era ‘Homelands Policy’ allocated areas according the ethnicity. This has left its mark on the ethnic distribution of Cape Town to this day. These overpopulated areas are distinguishable by their lack of infrastructure and services, but adhere proudly and defiantly to a mixture of traditional and western ways.
On a visit to a township (or informal settlement) capture the resident’s warmth, creative energy, adaptability, faith, community spirit and good old South African humour. A township visit is quite simply a pilgrimage that every tourist and South African should make.
Experience the lifestyle of the majority of South Africans on our interactive cultural Township Tour. Learn about the political past of Apartheid, how to click like a Xhosa and join the Sangoma for a traditional ceremony all whilst cycling through the community on a bicycle.
This is made possible by “AWOL’s Community-based Bicycle Tours in Cape Town, are a responsible take on township tours, providing tourists with many more opportunities to interact with the community than they would have from an air-conditioned bus.”
Bicycle township tours depart daily at 10am from their workshop at Chasmay Campus near Kommetjie/Noordhoek. Private tours including transfers with language guides available on request.
If cycling is not your strong point then we can arrange many alternatives for you. Langa, a Xhosa word meaning “sun” (is one of Cape Town’s first and oldest townships) only 15 km outside of the city centre. It is also one of the most manageable to visit in terms of size (just 1.5 km square) whereas two of the other main townships, Gugulethu and Khayelitsha, are a lot larger and take time to visit.
Langa offers many cultural experiences, whilst walking along the streets, meeting the locals, embracing the energy and vibrance of the community. Around 70,000 people live peacefully in the township, most of whom belong to the Xhosa tribe. Be sure not to miss out on this humbling and enlightening experience on the “other side of town”
